Questions, answered by the experts.

What is the difference between a standby generator and a portable generator?

A standby generator is a permanently installed unit that connects directly to your home’s natural gas or LP gas supply and starts automatically within seconds of a power outage, requiring no action from you. A portable generator is a temporary unit that must be manually set up outdoors, fueled with gasoline, and connected to appliances via extension cords. While portable generators are less expensive upfront, standby generators offer far superior convenience, safety, and reliability, especially during extended outages.

How is a gas generator connected to the fuel supply?

A standby generator requires a dedicated gas line run from your home’s main gas supply or LP tank to the generator’s location outside the home. The line must be properly sized based on the generator’s BTU demand to ensure adequate fuel pressure during operation. AEI ProGas handles the complete gas piping installation, ensuring the line is correctly sized, safely routed, and fully compliant with local codes.

How large of a generator do I need for my home?

Generator sizing depends on the total wattage of the appliances and systems you want to power during an outage. A whole-home generator that powers everything simultaneously requires a larger unit than one designed to run only essential circuits. Our team can help you assess your home’s power needs and recommend the appropriate generator size to meet your specific requirements.

Can a gas generator run indefinitely during an extended outage?

A natural gas standby generator can run for an extended period as long as the utility gas supply remains active, which is typically the case even during severe storms. LP gas generators are limited by the size of the propane tank, so tank capacity should be factored into the planning process for homes that rely on LP gas. Routine maintenance is still required for extended operation to ensure the engine remains in good working condition.

Does a standby generator require regular maintenance?

Yes. Like any engine-driven equipment, a standby generator requires regular maintenance to remain reliable. Most manufacturers recommend an annual service that includes an oil and filter change, spark plug inspection, air filter replacement, and a full operational test. Many generators also perform automatic weekly self-tests to ensure they are ready to operate at a moment’s notice. AEI ProGas can service the gas supply components and connections as part of your overall generator maintenance program.

Is a permit required to install a gas generator?

Yes, in most jurisdictions a permit is required for both the generator installation and the gas line work. AEI ProGas manages the gas piping permitting process, ensuring all work is inspected and approved by the appropriate local authorities. We coordinate closely with your generator installer to make sure the gas supply is ready when the unit is in place.
